Work with an individual Commons file page

Wikimedia Commons hosts media with public-domain information or free-license descriptions. This tool accepts an individual public File page and asks the existing media engine for available video or audio files. It is useful when comparing returned transcodes, checking a creator name or keeping an authorized reference. It does not download an entire category or guarantee that every type of Commons attachment is supported.

A Commons description page is different from a Wikipedia article containing the same media. Copy the address beginning with https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File: and the actual filename. Keep the extension and encoded characters intact. Names can contain spaces or non-Latin text; let the browser copy the full address instead of rebuilding it by hand.

Check the license on the source page

Commons files carry information about authorship, source and licensing. Public access alone is not a complete explanation of the conditions for reuse. Open the original file page and read its license and attribution instructions. A Creative Commons Attribution license generally requires credit; other license conditions can also apply. A downloader result is not a legal determination that every intended use is permitted.

For a project, save the source-page URL, creator credit, license name and license link alongside the media. The media file itself may not include all of that information. Consider separate rights involving people, trademarks or other protected material shown in a file. If the listing is disputed or unclear, resolve that uncertainty before redistributing it.

Original files and smaller versions

A video page may offer an original upload and several transcodes. The source can use WebM, Ogg or another format rather than MP4. Choose a format your device supports. Smaller resolutions generally transfer faster and use less storage; they are not higher-quality substitutes for the source. A file marked video-only contains no audio.

How to save available Commons media

1. Open the individual File page on Wikimedia Commons.
2. Read the description, authorship and license, and confirm the media is appropriate for your intended use.
3. Copy the complete page URL from the address bar.
4. Paste it into the form and request its metadata.
5. Compare the title, creator, description and preview where available.
6. Choose a listed file and keep the source information with your downloaded copy.

Your browser controls where the download is stored. Check its Downloads panel or your device’s Files app. A browser may play a video instead of automatically adding it to a photo library; importing it is a separate device action. Basic direct files do not require the server to merge streams.

The source page may also offer its own download controls, which are a useful alternative when you need a specific original, subtitle file or license detail.
