Open the publication itself
An Instagram post URL identifies one publication. On a computer, open the individual post and copy the address bar. On a phone, open the post’s sharing controls and choose Copy link when offered. Copying an account’s username, biography or profile address does not identify the same item.
A usual post address contains /p/ and a publication identifier. Reels often use /reel/. Shared URLs can redirect or carry extra parameters; a platform-generated link is normally the best starting point. If the address was shortened inside a message, open it first to confirm where it leads.
Decide which type of post you have
A single photo, a video and a carousel can all appear in an Instagram feed. A carousel holds more than one item, sometimes mixing images and video. Copying its post link may identify the whole collection rather than the slide currently visible. The result can therefore include multiple items, each requiring its own file choice.
Do not assume that an image shown as a preview is the full downloadable photo. Platforms can serve thumbnails at a smaller resolution. Likewise, a video preview may use a silent or shortened version. Review the actual available files and labels in the result before saving.
Use the matching tool
- Open the original post and verify its author.
- Copy the direct share link.
- Choose the post tool for an individual post or the carousel tool for a multi-item publication.
- Paste only the URL, without surrounding message text.
- Review the caption, preview and item count, then select a file.
A Reel has its own Reel workflow. A Story or Highlight may have additional time and authentication constraints. Choosing the correct page helps you read the right instructions; it does not override the platform’s access rules.
Troubleshoot a copied address
First check that the link still opens publicly. A copied address can outlive a deleted post. A public profile can also contain media that requires sign-in, is region-restricted or is unavailable to an anonymous request. If it only works in your authenticated app, the public downloader may correctly return an unavailable result.
When a link looks incomplete, recopy it from the original page. Avoid manually changing the identifier. If validation fails immediately, check for spaces or text before and after the URL. If metadata loads but a file later fails, the source may have changed or the temporary download link may have expired.
Keep context and rights
An image saved without its caption can lose important context, credit or license terms. Record the original post URL and any permission separately if you need the material for a project. Do not repost a carousel’s individual slides in a way that misrepresents the creator’s message.
