Use the post’s permalink
A Reddit community page contains many posts. To identify one publication, open it and copy its Share link or the address of its own page. A post permalink commonly includes /comments/ and an identifier. This is different from a subreddit listing, user profile, comment-only link or search result.
On mobile, open the post’s sharing controls and choose Copy link. On desktop, open the individual post and copy the address bar. If you are viewing a crosspost, check whether you need the crosspost’s discussion or the original media publication. The preview and title should match the item you intend to save.
Reddit-hosted media and external links differ
A post may contain a Reddit-hosted video, a gallery, one image or a link to another site. The fact that an external video appears in Reddit does not move that file onto Reddit’s servers. Its availability and access rules still depend on the original host.
Use the Reddit hub to choose the relevant workflow. If an external host is unsupported, open the original public source and use its matching tool if one exists. Do not expect a text post that merely mentions a video to return a media file.
Check video and audio labels
Some public video systems expose video and audio separately. A result labelled video-only will be silent. A combined option requires the server to prepare both streams when supported. Selecting a higher video resolution does not automatically add the missing audio track.
For an image gallery, inspect the returned items individually. A thumbnail can be smaller than the source image, and one post can contain several files. Save the intended item and confirm the file opens rather than assuming the first preview represents the whole gallery.
Public access and deleted posts
Private communities, account-required content, removed posts and regional or platform restrictions are outside this public workflow. A post can remain in a search result after the media is removed. An archived discussion is not a promise that its hosted media remains downloadable.
Verify the current original page first. If a request is temporarily limited, wait before trying again. Do not share account cookies or change links to try to access a private community. The downloader does not recreate deleted media from old titles or thumbnails.
Preserve the source context
A Reddit username is not necessarily the original rights holder. A repost may contain someone else’s work without permission. Follow the original creator’s license and attribution requirements, and avoid redistributing personal information merely because it appeared in a public discussion.
Keep the source permalink, permission and useful context with the saved file. When downloading your own contribution, retain the original file as the best backup.
